Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Tinnitus MiracleIt is estimated that up to 20% of the population in the United States experience tinnitus. For some it is a temporary or permanent condition that they can easily tolerate, but for others, that constant ringing in the ears becomes intolerable. Early treatments for the disorder were either ineffective or worse, but today, a treatment called Tinnitus Retraining Therapy or TRT has been proven to work.

Before we can explain how Tinnitus Retraining Therapy works, we need to understand a little bit about how Tinnitus emerges. Many people experience a temporary form of tinnitus after prolonged exposure to loud noise. This “ringing in the ears” is a direct response to the source of the noise and is not associated with the persistent ringing that seems to have no external source.

The auditory nerve system is highly complex and just a slight imbalance in its functioning is thought to be the cause of tinnitus. Formerly, researchers thought that the ringing sound was louder in people for whom it caused distress than for others, but studies using high-tech devices have demonstrated that this is not so. They have also discovered that the source of the ringing is often the brain and not the auditory system at all. This partly explains why former treatments were so often ineffective or made the condition worse.

When we hear a sound, the sound is processed in the emotional centers in our brain. Sounds can be interpreted as pleasurable or dangerous and these elicit an emotional response. Other sounds are heard, but filtered out as insignificant. The brain does not respond to tinnitus in most people, but in others the ringing sound elicits a fear response and they can become chronically distressed by it.

This is where Tinnitus Retraining Therapy comes in. This treatment is aimed primarily at neutralizing or eliminating the negative response to tinnitus, not the sound itself. The patient habituates to the sound, just as they have habituated to innumerable other sounds, such as traffic noise and the sound of a TV in the background. In time, they simply don’t notice it anymore.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is not an overnight treatment. It may take as long as one or two years of regular treatment on a variety of fronts to be effective. Psychologists, counselors and a very effective instrument called a Tinnitus Control Instrument or TCI are all part of the TRT process. The TCI uses White Noise to give temporary relief from the ringing sound to aid in the therapeutic process.

Many people have the mistaken belief that tinnitus must be some kind of auditory hallucination when they learn that the ringing sound is not necessarily produced in the ears. However, PET scans have shown that the sound is produced by a specific area in the brain and is not just a product of the imagination. The psychological component of TRT has nothing to do with this.

TRT has proven itself to be a very effective treatment for tinnitus, with an eighty percent success rate. It is well-worth exploring further as a treatment if you or someone you know is plagued by the condition. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy requires expert help to be fully effective, so experts should be consulted.
